WE BEGAN in 1930 as the Esso Choristers,

the company choir for the Standard Oil Company in Elizabeth, New Jersey

In September 1995, the Celebration Children's Choir was formed by Tom Pedas.  Beginning with 30 children, mostly from the Cranford Public Schools, the choir was created to provide children with the opportunity to learn and perform music. The choir grew over the years, bringing in children from Union, Middlesex, and Somerset Counties, representing more than twenty towns in the area.

Though there are many individual adult and children's choruses throughout New Jersey, our Youth Choir is unique in that it is tuition-free.

When Esso changed its name to Exxon, the singers became the Exxon Choristers, and membership in the choir was open to the general public.  Sponsorship by Exxon ended in the late 70's when Exxon had a cutback in funding.  In 1980, the choir became a nonprofit independent organization and adopted the name The Celebration Singers.

Over the years, our notable performances include the 1964 World's Fair, Liberty State Park, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., Symphony Hall in Chicago, IL, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. We have traveled to Austria, Germany, and Prague in 2008, Scotland and England in 2011, and Italy in 2017.

Since the repertoire of the choir is traditionally all treble music for unchanged voices, the “Young Men’s Ensemble” was formed of older boys whose voices are in various stages of change.  This group has since expanded to an advanced group of singers from 7th-12th grade, currently known as the "Middle C’s."

Since its inception, over 300 young people have received a wonderful tuition-free choral experience and the opportunity to sing alongside the adult choir.  Several former Children's Choir members have gone on to major in music education and become music teachers.  Many former Children’s Choir members have gone on to sing in the adult choir. Most notably, the current Youth Choir Director, Samantha Gordon.
